On June 19, 1947,(at age 19), Richard J. (Dick) Smigelski purchased the Jarmuzeski's Grocery store located at 701 N. 2nd Ave. Alpena, MI. On February 17, 1949, Dick's Grocery was destroyed by Fire. On May 22, 1949, Dick's Superette was ready for business. The New Location was directly across the street at 712 N, 2nd Ave Alpena, MI. Local businesses filled two full pages of the newspaper congratulating Dick on his Grand Reopening. Within the store he had a large walk-in cooler for hanging fresh meat. Dick was well known for his homemade Kielbasa which was fresh and smoked. Andy Smigelski, Dicks Youngest son, purchased the building at 712 N 2nd Ave. The entire building was stripped inside and subdivided into office space. He added a meeting room along with a room for making Smigelski Keilbasa.
